Where AI Meets Social Mobility: Five Emerging Patterns

What we're learning from ventures building technology to widen access to opportunity

Artificial intelligence is already changing how people learn, work, find information and make decisions. But when we think about AI through the lens of social mobility, a different set of questions comes into view. Can technology make opportunities easier to find and navigate? Can it help more young people build the skills and confidence they need to participate in a changing economy? And how do we make sure new technologies widen access to opportunity rather than reinforce the barriers that already exist?
These are some of the questions at the heart of the AI and Social Mobility Challenge Prize, delivered by EY Foundation and Social Tech Trust, in partnership with the Social Mobility Commission, and supported by Microsoft, HSF Kramer, EY, Fieldfisher and LinkedIn.
The Challenge Prize was created to identify and support early-stage ventures using AI and emerging technologies to improve access to education, skills, employment and opportunity for young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds in the UK. We looked for ventures combining a meaningful use of technology with a clear understanding of the people they aim to support, a credible route to sustainable growth and the potential for measurable social impact.
Over the past few weeks, we have reviewed applications and spoken directly with founders as part of a multi-stage selection process. Ventures were considered across four areas: their fit with the challenge, commercial viability, potential to scale and, importantly, their potential for meaningful impact.
Taken together, the applications offer an early view of a developing innovation landscape. They show where founders believe technology can make a difference, the barriers they are choosing to address, and some of the questions that emerge when AI is designed specifically with social impact in mind.
Alongside this, EY Foundation's Youth Voice Forum has been considering the same landscape from another perspective: that of young people who will increasingly live, learn and work alongside these technologies. Their new manifesto, Don't Build AI Without Us, sets out what young people want from AI that aims to create opportunity. Its message is simple: young people should not only be users of these technologies, but should have a meaningful role in shaping them.
Bringing these perspectives together — what ventures are building and what young people say matters — gives us a useful starting point for understanding where AI and social mobility are beginning to meet.
Here are five patterns we're seeing so far.
1. Careers and opportunity navigation are important areas for innovation
One of the clearest patterns is the level of activity around careers and employability.
We are seeing ventures explore how AI can help people understand their options, identify opportunities, recognise their skills, build confidence and navigate pathways into education and employment. Career navigation, opportunity matching, coaching and employability support all feature strongly across the applications.
This matters because access to opportunity isn't simply about whether an opportunity exists.
Knowing where to look, understanding which opportunities are relevant, knowing how to present your experience and having someone who can help you navigate unfamiliar systems can all influence what feels possible. Access to professional networks, personalised careers advice and informal guidance is not evenly distributed.
Technology has the potential to make some of this support more accessible and personalised. But the social mobility question is not simply whether AI can make career navigation more efficient. It is whether it can help widen access to the knowledge, guidance and connections that enable people to make informed choices about their futures.

2. AI literacy is becoming part of the social mobility question
Another strong theme is AI, coding and digital skills, with ventures developing tools to help young people understand and engage with emerging technologies. This points to a dual challenge. There is the question of how AI itself might be used to widen access to education, employment and opportunity. But there is also the question of who has the skills, confidence and access needed to participate in an increasingly AI-enabled economy.
As AI becomes more embedded in education and the workplace, AI literacy could increasingly shape people's ability to access opportunities. That literacy is not only about knowing how to use particular tools. It also means understanding their limitations, knowing when to question their outputs and developing the judgement to use them effectively and responsibly.
This is also reflected in Don't Build AI Without Us. The EYF Youth Voice Forum's Manifesto argues that AI should strengthen learning, creativity and critical thinking, helping people grow rather than creating dependence on technology.
Widening access to AI therefore means more than making tools available. It also means giving people the knowledge and agency to use them confidently and critically.
3. Lived experience is influencing what gets built
Across the applications, many founders described personal experience of the barriers their ventures are trying to address. Others described close connections to the young people or communities experiencing those barriers.
That matters because it can change where innovation begins. Instead of starting with a technology and searching for somewhere to apply it, many founders are beginning with a problem they know closely: navigating education, struggling to access appropriate support, encountering barriers in recruitment, or seeing first-hand where existing systems are not working as they should.
Lived experience does not automatically guarantee that a product will be inclusive or effective. But it can bring different questions, assumptions and forms of knowledge into the design process.
For responsible innovation, the distinction is important. The question should not only be “What can we build with AI?” but “What problem are we trying to address, for whom, and is technology the right way to help?”
4. Designing with young people matters
Another encouraging pattern is the role young people are already playing in the development of many of the solutions we encountered. Applicants described young people contributing through research, testing, feedback and product development. In many cases, founders said that young people's input had directly informed what they were building.
This reflects a wider principle at the heart of the Challenge Prize: young people should be active participants in shaping technologies that may influence their education, work and future opportunities.
But participation is not simply about asking for feedback once a product has already been designed. In Don't Build AI Without Us, young people also argue that they should be involved from the beginning: helping to define problems, test products, identify potential harms and decide what good outcomes should look like. Crucially, their feedback should be able to change the final design.
The Youth Voice Forum asks: How have young people helped shape this product, and what changed because of their involvement?
This question also takes us towards a broader conversation about responsible AI. Principles such as fairness, transparency and accountability become much more tangible when we ask whose experiences have informed a system, whether different groups can use it effectively, and whether the people affected by technology can understand and challenge how it works.
5. Ambition needs to become evidence
The applications also reveal a field with considerable ambition. Many of the ventures we encountered are still relatively early in their development. Some are testing initial products or business models; others are beginning to build their evidence base and thinking about how their solutions could reach significantly more people over time.
That is exactly where an important challenge begins. A promising technology is not automatically an effective social mobility intervention. Growing the number of users is not necessarily the same as improving access to opportunity. And technical performance alone cannot tell us whether someone's choices, confidence, skills or prospects have changed.
For ventures working in this space, evidence therefore needs to develop alongside the technology and the business model. What outcomes are they trying to change? Who is benefiting? Who might not be? What evidence would demonstrate that an intervention has improved access to opportunity? And what unintended effects should be monitored along the way?
The EYF Youth Voice Forum's Manifesto puts this challenge particularly clearly: We believe impact should be measured by people's lives, not only by growth or efficiency.
And it asks founders: How will we know this technology has genuinely improved opportunities rather than simply increased efficiency or profit?
Building responsible AI for opportunity
These are early signals, not definitive conclusions about the AI and social mobility sector. But they begin to show where innovation is gathering momentum and, just as importantly, where further questions need to be asked. There are also clear connections between the questions emerging from ventures and young people and established approaches to responsible AI.
EY's Responsible AI Principles include fairness, transparency, explainability and accountability, alongside data protection, reliability, security, compliance and sustainability. In the context of social mobility, these principles become practical questions. Who benefits from a technology? Who could be excluded? Do people understand when AI is being used? Can they question decisions that affect them? And who is responsible for making sure the technology delivers the outcomes it promises?
The EYF Youth Voice Forum Manifesto adds another important dimension: responsible technology should not only protect young people from harm. Young people should have agency in shaping the technologies that affect their futures.
That feels particularly important when technology is being developed specifically in the name of widening opportunity.
What happens next?
Over the coming months, the Challenge Prize will work with a selected cohort of ventures to explore many of these questions in practice: from understanding the problem and the people they are designing for, to strengthening their impact models, commercial approaches and responsible use of technology.
Through the AI and Social Mobility Insights series, we'll continue sharing what we learn from the ventures, from young people and from the programme partners working alongside them.
The central question is not simply what AI can do. It is whether we can build and use it in ways that genuinely widen access to opportunity, and whether the people whose futures it will shape have a meaningful voice in deciding what that future looks like.
